Battery life, History repeating
Why this could be a Niche opportunity
for Device Manufacturers
When the 4G technology came into the market, the performance of a battery phone was a touchstone which could not be overlooked as the 4G network consumes more battery in comparison to 3G and 2G. With the arrival of the 5G and considering today’s consumer extensive usage of the smartphone, this still remains the case in 2019.
As explained by Deloitte in its Global Trends in TMT (Technology, Media & Telecommunications) article, we all use our smartphones as wristwatches, cameras, gaming devices, radios, TVs, computers, recorders, maps, newspapers, magazines and much more. The QoE demand for all this will be reinforced with 5G capabilities.
The result on devices is an increased demanding battery life as we expect our smartphones to last a full day without having to look for a power supply.
Actually, this high level of requirement could be a nice opportunity for device manufacturers.
Indeed, as Worldwide Shipments went Down by 4.9% in the Holiday Quarter Capping off the Worst Year Ever (source IDC Jan 2019) and as it reflects year 2018 trend, smartphones suppliers will probably need to adopt a niche sales strategy for their device by concentrating on certain kinds of use.
As the Senior Analyst Geerit Schneemann explains « It can be a mid-range handset with numerous camera objectives or a smartphone with a long-life battery».
This is quite an interesting standpoint concerning battery life which could attract both consumers for their personal use and organisations for their professional fleet.
All this means that knowing and bench-marking a device battery life is still -and maybe even more than ever with high demanding 5G applications- key for OEMs and ODMs.
At SmartViser, we have developed viSerBatt to help our customers meet these challenges. We defined our application to enable device manufacturers to test battery life from an embedded customised test plan according to personas and their usage (Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, Professionals).
We believe that to leverage OEMs and ODMs growth by bringing them a top reliable view on battery life in a simple and automated way might turn a cost-effective test application into a fundamental tool.
