- Rohde & Schwarz and SmartViser partner to demonstrate test solutions for new EEI regulation
Press Release: Rohde & Schwarz and SmartViser have partnered to develop a solution for testing compliance with a new regulation that will require Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) labeling for smartphones and tablets sold in the EU. At the core of the solution is the R&S CMX500, a radio communication tester that supports end-to-end testing of all signaling use cases, combined with SmartViser’s viSer test automation application - available in Android and iOS. Both companies will showcase the solution at Mobile World Congress 2024. Munich, February 22nd, 2024 — Rohde & Schwarz, a leading provider of test and measurement solutions, has partnered with SmartViser, a provider of active test automation products, to develop a tailored solution for testing compliance with a new EU regulation concerning Energy Efficient Index (EEI) labeling for smartphones and tablets. The DELEGATED REGULATION (EU) 2023/1669, published in September 2023, mandates EEI labeling for smartphones and tablets sold in the EU, starting from June 20, 2025. Annex II of the regulation specifies energy efficiency class and EEI requirements, while Annex IV outlines measurement and calculation methods. SmartViser has been actively involved in creating solutions that help customers ensure that their products comply with this regulation. The company is currently offering the first pilot application, which features a repeatable and reliable test procedure and can be installed in smartphones and tablets to execute a series of user actions, such as calls, browsing and streaming. To address future test needs, SmartViser and Rohde & Schwarz have paired up and combined their solutions. The R&S CMX500 wireless communication tester supports the latest wireless technologies, including LTE, 5G NR and WLAN. Press Release: Joint solution tests the energy efficiency of smartphones and tablets to meet labeling requirements Solution allows designers to use the SmartViser viSer software with any Keysight UXM 5G Wireless Test Platform configuration to determine a device’s Energy Efficiency June 11th, 2024 SANTA ROSA, Calif., – Keysight Technologies, Inc. Hybrid Mission Critical Networks and Devices The shift from voice-centric to information-centric field operations is progressing significantly. Previously hindered by technology, field operations are now enhanced by digital narrowband services like TETRA and the introduction of critical broadband over 4G/5G, removing technological barriers and highlighting cultural limitations and imaginative potential. On the network front, existing TETRA/P25 capabilities will be maintained for some time, while more organizations receive limited dedicated spectrum for public safety LTE/5G, with non-critical traffic offloaded to commercial networks. Since no single network can ensure 100% availability, satellite solutions, interworking functions, and device-to-device will enhance coverage and reliability. In terms of devices single technology TETRA handhelds and ruggedised, MCX-enabled smartphones will operate side by side and in CCW24 we have seen several manufacturers unveiling devices for hybrid usage delivering mission-critical TETRA and 4G LTE broadband voice and data communications. There were some great examples from Sepura, Motorola and Hytera. 2. Impact of 5G and other broadband technologies in the evolution of Critical Communication Networks Critical communications networks must ensure coverage, capacity, availability, and suitability for their specific purposes. TETRA, the globally adopted narrowband standard for critical communications, is designed for mission-critical voice and short messaging. It achieves coverage through low-frequency deployments and meets capacity needs with efficient semi-duplex group functions. TETRA ensures availability with multiple redundancy layers, including overlapping cell coverage, autonomous base station operation, and direct device-to-device communication (Direct Mode Operation). Recent advancements in 4G/5G have introduced viable alternatives. Particularly with 5G, additional access methods, such as Non-Terrestrial-Networks (NTN) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations, provide backup connections when visible. Device-to-Device (D2D) over Sidelink extends coverage to underground areas via network gateways. 3GPP standards-based broadband networks operate across multiple frequency bands, balancing coverage and capacity. Mission Critical Services (MCX) – including Push-to-Talk, Video, and Data – enhanced with Quality of Service, Priority, and Pre-emption (QPP) capabilities, offering new deployment options. 3. Certification Process Following the TCCA Critical Communications World, Global Certification Forum (GCF) and TCCA-Critical Communications held the MCS workshop and MCSWS #36 meeting on the 17th of May kindly hosted by Airbus Public Safety and Security in their offices in Dubai. GCF’s global device certification programme developed by Network Operators, Device Manufacturers, and Test Industry is being extended to include MCS certification. Certification of Mission Critical Services products will cover initial Conformance testing, with Field Trials Testing and Interoperability Testing following in later stages. - 5G Rollout Status
5G mobile networks are the latest generation of mobile network technology, which promise faster download and upload speeds, lower latency, and better connectivity compared to previous generations of mobile networks. 5G networks use new technology such as massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) antennas, millimeter wave spectrum, and network slicing to deliver faster and more reliable connectivity. These new technologies allow for more data to be transmitted at faster speeds, which is essential for applications such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and autonomous vehicles. In addition to faster speeds, 5G networks also offer lower latency, which is the time it takes for data to travel between a device and a server. This is especially important for applications that require real-time responses, such as gaming or remote surgeries and eventually driveless cars. Overall, 5G networks have the potential to revolutionize the way we use mobile devices, enabling new and innovative applications and services that were not possible with previous generations of mobile networks. However, it is important to note that the deployment of 5G networks is still ongoing, and it may take some time before the full potential of this technology is realized. 5G Band Differences 5G Networks operate in different frequencies and these frequencies have different characteristics. Low-band 5G operates at frequencies below 1 GHz, which are similar to those used by previous generations of mobile networks. This type of 5G offers the widest coverage area and can penetrate walls and other obstacles more easily, but it has a limited capacity for data transmission and can only offer moderate speed improvements over 4G. Mid-band 5G operates at frequencies between 1 GHz and 6 GHz, which offers a good balance of coverage and capacity. This type of 5G can deliver faster speeds than low-band 5G, but its coverage area is smaller, and it can be affected by obstacles such as buildings and trees. High Bands and mmWave 5G operate at frequencies above 24 GHz, which offer the highest capacity for data transmission and the fastest speeds, potentially reaching up to 10 Gbps. However, mmWave signals have a short range and can be easily blocked by obstacles, which means that they require more infrastructure to provide coverage in a given area. Overall, the different types of 5G networks offer different trade-offs between coverage area, capacity, and speed. Low-band 5G is best suited for providing broad coverage, while mid-band 5G can offer a good balance of coverage and capacity, and mmWave 5G is best suited for providing extremely high-speed connections in densely populated areas. 5G Rollout Status: According to a GSA report, around 70 countries had 5G networks as of June 2022, up from just 38 in mid-2020. Approximately 15 more have had 5G mobile technology deployed in part. It is expected that 5G will reach 1 billion users this year after just 3.5 years in use, compared with 4 years for 4G and 12 years for 3G. The three major carriers have built over 1 million 5G base stations, covering over 98% of cities and urban areas. Susie joined SmartViser in 2016, is part of the internal steering committee, responsible for developing and implementing the company's commercial strategy and encouraging a customer-centric culture. Christmas and New Year Message from SmartViser Rennes, France – December 2021 2021 has continued being a very challenging year severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Undoubtedly, our world has been deeply changed during this tubulous time and has impacted everyone in an unprecedented way. Our thoughts go out to anyone who has been personally impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. We have seen though, that vaccines and treatments have been developed in record time showing what can be achieved in a short time when businesses and governments work together to overcome one of the toughest challenges in recent years. What we're doing to keep everyone safe At SmartViser the health and well-being of our partners and staff have always been our top priority. Following the government guidelines in each country and the business continuity procedures that we have in place; we have allowed employees to work remotely, and every member of the team is fully set up and reachable to support our customers and partners across the world. There are also special protective measures for those who work in our lab. We do understand that many of you heavily rely on our products and services to keep your operations running smoothly and without interruption and the team will continue to work continuously to ensure minimum disruption. Reflection on 2021 Despite the many challenges that 2021 has brought it has been one of the busiest years for SmartViser and ViserMark. In terms of business, we have seen our customer base continue to grow and we have also expanded to new business sectors and geographical regions: We have started the first Mission Critical Audio MOS assessment on PTT (Push to Talk) with a Mobile Network Operator We have welcomed new OEMs using our test automation solution in all their global locations We are proud to onboard new MNOs in Europe and our first one in Canada, We have continued to support our customers during the SFR certification as an SFR accredited lab and are honoured to win the trust of new customers for this activity We have continued to expand our customer base in China and Japan, trust from MNOs working on 5 years contracts commitment. Expanded our territory in Canada and Latin America with five ongoing trials with Mobile Network Operators in that region Despite the travel limitation in 2021 we have also succeeded to expand our territory in Africa by starting a PoC with a Regulator in the region And last but not least Started Collaborating with Galaxie Media Alliance which includes PhonAndroid, Tom’s Guide France, TechRadar France, Tom’s Media Group. We are very pleased to have added Galaxie Media Alliance to our ever-growing Media network such as GSMArena, Les Numeriques, FrAndroid, DDay.it I am pleased that everyone’s hard work at SmartViser has contributed to an impressive 40% growth in 2021. Our R&D team has been working on several topics and brought some new key features to our test automation solution viSer. Among these were: Further improvement of the Remote Testing Function in our test automation solution viSer meaning testing can be triggered from any location Released the first IOS version to selected customers and plan to roll out to more customers in 2022 Released a new Web dashboard analytics the Viser Web Services Studio which allows you to build your dashboard with the data you want to monitor and analyse Enhanced the Audio MOS solution to cover OTT (like Viber, WhatsApp calls) as well as cellular calls Enhanced 5G capabilities for both SA and NSA Smartphone Battery Life and Efficiency Following the successful launch of ViserMark in 2020 we have continued to further fine-tune and bring new features that our customers and end-users will benefit from. In 2021 we have released three new labels in ViserMark. The world’s first battery efficiency label. In the last couple of years at SmartViser, we are on a mission to highlight the smartphone battery energy efficiency topic and work with manufacturers across the world to improve battery performance for smartphones and tablets. Our contribution to the industry has been recognised and I am very pleased to announce that we are officially working with the EU Commission to develop a solution for the Battery Energy Efficiency Index for smartphones and tablets based on the innovative test automation solution viSer. Meet us at MWC 2022 For 2022 will continue for the seventh time to exhibit at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from 28th February to 3rd March 2022.
