  • SmartViser Unveils viSerBatt The Fully Automated Battery Life Testing Solution

Press Release Date: 24th February 2019 A formal assessment of Smartphone Battery Life could help Manufacturers access a niche market opportunity. SmartViser, the recognised expert in Mobile Testing Automation solutions, is proud to take the opportunity of the Mobile World Congress must-be-there show to unveil viSerBatt , its latest realisation. When the 4G technology came into the market, the performance of a battery phone was a touchstone that could not be overlooked as the 4G network consumes more battery in comparison to 3G and 2G. With the arrival of the 5G and considering today’s consumer extensive usage of the smartphone (streaming, gaming, app browsing, IoTs…), this still remains the case in 2019. The result on smartphones is an increasingly demanding battery life as we expect our smartphones to last a full day without having to look for a power supply. Actually, this high level of requirement could be a nice opportunity for smartphone manufacturers that choose to focus on a long-lasting battery life device offer. All this means that knowing and benchmarking a smartphone battery life is still -and maybe even more than ever with high demanding 5G applications- key for OEMs and ODMs. At SmartViser, we have developed viSerBatt to help our customers meet these challenges. We defined our application to be fully automated and to simply enable smartphone manufacturers to test battery life from an embedded customized test plan, according to user profiles and their usage (Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, Professionals). We also added a reference mean Day of Use (DoU) usage. We believe that to leverage OEMs and ODMs growth by bringing them a top reliable view on battery life in a simple and automated way might turn a cost-effective test application like viSerBatt into a fundamental tool. About SmartViser SmartViser with long telecoms expertise and customer-centric innovation has developed the standalone test automation suite viSer that allows OEMs, ODMs, Mobile Operators, MVNOs, Regulators and any company offering Telecom Services to test, benchmark, monitor, troubleshoot or measure QoS/QoE on devices, connectivity, and mobile network technology. • Why Audio MOS testing is more important than ever!

Include Audio MOS testing to ensure superior QoS and QoE audio quality for your end users. The beginning of an end for 3G Networks Many mobile operators have taken the decision to switch off 3G in order to free up frequencies for 4G and 5G and some of them were already targeting to phase out 3G by the end of 2020. With all this talk on 5G and its new capabilities, it is easy to forget that many end users have not actually transitioned to 4G yet. This move by operators to phase out 3G and in some cases 2G networks will also encourage a move from the end-users towards VoLTE enabled devices to ensure optimum quality of voice calls as the alternative will be circuit switch fallback (CSFB) to 2G which will not provide acceptable voice quality. The consumers are more demanding and when they have to make voice calls, they expect stellar audio quality. It is not surprising that according to a consumer survey by Deloitte the number one reason in the US why end-users are leaving a mobile network is the voice quality. Voice quality remains an important factor for end-users and many media review companies and Mobile Network Operators are now heavily including it in their testing scope. A European Operator will now include Audio MOS as part of their device acceptance process emphasizing the importance of Audio MOS testing. VoLTE will be the foundation for 5G Voice Service Despite the maturity of the IMS framework, there is still lots of room for improvement. According to the data shared by Emanuel Kolta from GSMA intelligence in November 2020 only 30% of the mobile operators that have launched 4G have also deployed commercial VoLTE services. The rollout of 5G is also expected to boost the pace of VoLTE launches over the next five years. As 5G will no longer support circuit-switched fallback (CSFB) for voice, Mobile Network Operators will need to rely on VoLTE in order to provide voice services for their end-users . SmartViser's unique fully test automated offering for Audio MOS testing At SmartViser we have noticed the increased number of requests from our OEMs and MNOs customers alike to include voice quality Audio MOS in the list of KPIs currently supported by viser™ . Placing our customers at the heart of innovation our R&D has developed the first version of a fully automated Audio MOS scoring based on POLQA™ industry standard which was launched in 2019 with great feedback. viser™ test automation now includes Audio MOS measurement in the following states: Audio Uplink Audio Downlink End To End Scalable or Lab, Field testing and large-scale deployments The Mean Opinion Score, or MOS as it is now widely known, assesses the quality of voice of calls using a scale of 1-5 (5 being the highest quality) based on the scientific algorithm POLQA ™ . A score of 1 means that despite great effort, it is impossible to understand what is being said during the call (the call repeatedly cuts in and out). A score of 5 means the quality is excellent, with no effort required to understand what is being said. The MOS makes it possible to compare a variety of codecs and audio connections. The Audio Quality can be tested or monitored whatever the technology (2G-3G-4G-5G, VoIP: VoLTE - VoWifi, or mixed …). It offers great opportunities for OEMs/ODMs to fully test their device and ensure it decodes correctly and with the highest quality voice calls in any network infrastructure. Truly device agnostic that can be used in any device. viSer Audio MOS test automation allows Mobile Operators and smartphone manufacturers to test voice quality on any device Android or ios. Audio MOS can be used for: Voice Calls Skype Calls Viber Calls MS Teams Calls WhatsApp calls Google Meet Other OTT Do you want to know more? • Field Testing - The Critical Success Factor for Smartphone devices and Mobile Network Services

Field Testing is one of the most critical aspect to ensure success when a new device is launched in the market or for Mobile Operators to assess their services in terms of Quality of Experience (QoE) and Quality of Services (QoS). In the recent months, many businesses have been under an enormous amount of pressure to continue operating as “usual” with the Covid-19 pandemic making headlines across the world. Many businesses have been strenuously revising their Business Continuity Plans (BCP) to ensure minimum impact in their operations and ensure staff safety. With the social distancing measures in places many governments have implemented rules and regulations meaning that Field Testing had to be performed by only one person in the car. This has put the tester in great danger who now has to drive and also test at the same time. Smartphone Device Manufacturers In order to launch a device in the market one part of the testing needs to be performed in live network conditions to ensure good software quality, performance, interoperability, robustness and stability. Field testing needs to be performed in a variety of network operators with cellular data switching between different RATs 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G (Inter handovers) and different cells within the same RAT (intra handovers). Weak area conditions and varying signal strength areas should also be considered during the planning of the testing. Field Testing requires careful planning and needs to include: Call Performance 2G, 3G, 4G, VoLTE/VoWiFi, 5G KPIs for CSFB and VoLTE services FTP uploads/downloads 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G HTTP uploads / downloads 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G Video Streaming 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G Messaging Battery Performance Drive routes need to be selected carefully and different modes of transport should also be considered to include both drive tests and high-speed train conditions. Mobile Network Operators For mobile network operators Field Testing is also of paramount importance. They can test devices as part of their device acceptance process but also assess the Quality of Experience and Quality of Service for their end users. As part of Field-testing MNOs do perform high load testing meaning several devices under test at the same time to stress certain aspects of the network including new services introduction like VoLTE, 5G etc. The other areas that are normal included are: Call Performance and Audio MOS, 2G, 3G, 4G, VoLTE/VoWiFi, 5G File Transfer Performance uploads/downloads 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G Streaming Performance 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G Messaging Coverage and Reachability Network Benchmark Network Impact on Battery Performance One way of ensuring efficient and optimised Field testing is implement test automation. viSer Test Automation will ensure all key activities are performed automatically and results are uploaded in the Viser Web Services Dashboard that can be reviewed and analysed. This article was published in French in Phonandroid and this is the English version. Date: 15 December 2021 Smartphones will have to have to provide information about the energy efficiency of their batteries. We are used to seeing these labels on household appliances indicating the energy efficiency of the good we are about to buy. It will soon be the same for smartphones. This is the technology developed by the French Company Smart V iser , which has been selected to measure it. Credit: Marianne Krohn on Unsplash Smart V iser who is the first company to provide battery life scores for mobile phones batteries has been selected by the European Commission to ensure the energy labelling of smartphones and tablets. These devices will be ranked on a scale from A to E according to the score they receive. This new label will be introduced in 2022 and will become mandatory in 2023. It will enable us to see how well the software is optimised to utilise its battery capacity at best, a capacity that tends to increase year by year. Indeed, for several years, manufacturers have increased the batteries size to answer our intensive use. While in 2013 the average battery capacity for smartphones was around 3,400mAh, towards the end of 2020, the average battery size is now between 4,000mAh to 5,000mAh. It is likely, that soon the standard size battery reaches 6,000mAh . This trend seems to be fuelled by two main drivers, one being the consumers demanding better battery life and the other is technology advancements with breakthrough materials, like graphene which is expected to be a game-changer. A BIGGER BATTERY DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN LONGER BATTERY LIFE Increasing the battery size is expected to make a difference in the battery life, but from what we have seen in the last 12 months in Viser Mark this is not necessarily always the case. Simply increasing the battery size without further optimisations will not result in optimum battery performance. In its lab, Smart V iser has tested devices with a 5,000mAh battery capacity that last between 3.5 days to very disappointing 1.5 days . The big performance gap has a lot to do with the effort each manufacturer had put in their R&D to search and implement better autonomy for their devices. Chips and operating systems also target to become more energy-efficient, but more effort needs to be made in improving the power management of the device than relying on a larger battery size that utilises more precious metals harming the environment. So, when you are looking for your next smartphone make sure you check the latest results from ViserMark SMARTVISER'S SOLUTION, A BENCHMARK IN ENERGY POWER EFFICIENCY Smart V iser the founder of the innovative test automation solution " viSer " is on a mission to highlight the autonomy of smartphone battery energy efficiency and works closely with smartphone manufacturers across the world to improve battery performance. Back in 2014, Smart V iser launched the innovative app " viSer" that helps Smartphone Manufacturers, Mobile Network Operators and Media to test, monitor, benchmark, troubleshoot and measure Quality of Experience in their devices and networks. Thanks to the unique technology the powerful engine of " viSer" makes it possible to test smartphones in the same way that an end user will use them, the reflection of true use. Thanks to this technology in 2020 the Viser Mark was born. It is the first industry label to provide accurate battery life scores and labels to help users make more informed choices when purchasing a new smartphone. Also, it helps smartphone manufacturers identify shortfalls in their battery performance and efficiency in order to improve their quality. LEARN MORE ABOUT VISERMARK LABELS ENERGY EFFICIENCY: IS MY SMARTPHONE POWER EFFICIENT? It simply means maximising the performance of a smartphone while reducing the amount of energy it consumes, with minimal impact on battery life. It is calculated using Battery Life and Battery Capacity. This is expressed in “Leaves" and reflects a rating between 1 being least and 5 being the most power-efficient. The most battery efficient smartphone will provide good battery life and reduce the number of times the battery will need to be charged which harms its longevity. Check the top 10 smartphones with the Best Battery Power Efficiency BATTERY PERFORMANCE: HOW DOES THIS SMARTPHONE COMPARE TO OTHERS? This performance score ranges from 0 to 100.
